The E Street band lost the Big Man

Shit, so much for the E Street Band. Bye, bye magic. So long Big Man. Clarence Clemons past away today. He was known for his powersax in Bruce Springsteens E Street Band. At 69 het died of complications from a stroke.

The very first pop music I heard on my very first walkman was a mixed tape my sister made for me in 1985. On that tape was a lot of Bruce Springsteens Born in the U.S.A. So ever since I’ve listened to music, my musical taste had partly been defined by the sax solo’s of Clarence Clemons.

Now, 26 years later, I’ve had four opportunities as a music photographer to do a Bruce Springsteen concert. Three of those shows were with the E-Street band. My main goal, of course, is to get a good photo of Bruce Springsteen. As we only get 3 songs to do it in, there is not much time to focus on other band members.

Luckily I shot the above photo at the Pinkpop festival in 2009. It’s not my best photo, but I’m glad to have it. I remember noticing Clarence Clemons was getting older. He had difficulties walking and I believe the big chair behind him, was put on the stage so he could rest and save all his energy for his solo’s. But man, does he look cool or what!?

Rest in peace Big Man. Thanks for your solo’s.
